The village of Fitts welcomed a goodly number of hashers to the run which set off from the beach close to Jordan's Supermarket, across the main road and inland through the delightful hamlets and undulating land of Oxnards, Appleby, Haynesville, Thorpes, Durants and Holders Hill.
The Horn blasted valiantly to warn dogs and traffic of our presence. In fact, Nigel proved to be a star turn for most of the run, trying to ensure that the pack stayed together. Not that ex-HM Roger the dodger obeyed - bluntly refusing to call the on even though he often led the pack. Perhaps that why! Thankfully there are plenty of hounds who bawl and shout all day long. David Cummins showed what good hashing is all about, checking and calling in regular fashion. The HM nodded in approval whilst an aged ex HM, Brian Stanley wheezed from check to check.
The trail crossed a cricket pitch before ascending a long incline of steps. Vaughan Renwick gathered pace and soon we entered burnt scrubland. It seemed to me that some of the trail was laid before the fire but perhaps the Hares used little flour. Whatever the case, one of leaders managed to run on the trail the wrong way and like lemmings the pack followed. Much confusion. Mike Rogers thought the trail 'should go so' or 'like so'. The result, a splintered pack. I ended up with a mini pack of about 7 plus the Horn ending up on the fringe of the Sandy Lane estate. Linda Hart then started to fret, and wished she had bus money for the journey back to the bar. However, after a circuit of the polo ground with aromas of horseshit and jasmine prevailing, she managed to jolly herself up and simply trained her brain to what she would consume later! In the meantime Pat Stanley hogged on some popcorn and Francie joined in.
At Holders Hill the mini pack caught up with the main pack with a multitude of hounds milling about like rabbits lost in headlights. The mini pack and Horn did the busines and quickly found the trail which wended its way through more scrub and along avenues before veering down to the beach. The On In took us along the beach. I'm told the Dodger was in the front three closely followed by Vaughan and then James Craig. The bar was a truly bonny sight and was soon surrounded by obviously thirsty hashers.
An excellent run, followed by some trumped up charges by the guest RA. Correct judgements included Giselle and Brian being awarded the Shit shirts. Then they rolled about in the sand! Sadly the bar was dismantled and beer taken away without the HM or Boozemaster advising those that were left. Today's RA please note!
